HURRICANE book review by Anthony M.
By 1980, New Jersey’s notorious death house had been revived as a lover’s alcove, but Rubin “Hurricane” Carter still wanted no part of it. The author’s name is James S.Hirsch he is a former staff writer for the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He is currently working on a book about the Tulsa race riot of 1921. He lives in Needham, Massachusetts. The main Characters of this book are Rubin Carter, John Artis, Cathy Martin, Lesra. The strengths of this book are survival, love, guilt, rage, because this book is based on real life reality and how people can be when you are in prison.
There are things I like about this book and the first thing is this book jumps out at you it has its on style of pulling people’s attention. An example of this is when Rubin, which is known as Hurricane, tells about his whole life from the beginning to the end. He tells you about hoe prison can be and how you can be blamed for something you didn’t do. Black boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter and a young acquaintance, John Artis were wrongly convicted of triple murder by an all-white jury in Paterson, New Jersey. Another example of this part is when hurricane pleaded innocent and the jury tried to find him guilty. This book is a very serious book. This book really relate to me because its talks about how people do you when you try and do the right thing.
Another thing I like about this book is the boxing. For example of this is when hurricane started boxing and found out he was better than he thought he was. Hurricane tried to take it to the top but it didn’t work he missed out on the opportunity of being a famous boxer. “I took right punch then a left punch and he went down”. Another example of this quote is when hurricane won. Hurricane beat all of his opponents he came in contact with he was going to be the greatest but he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. “Hurricane is unstoppable he might be the greatest of all time said his trainer. “We are trying to get him a fight with Muhammad but he is scared.”
The main character’s attitude is what made me really enjoy this book for example, when Hurricane went to jail for a long time for a murder he didn’t commit he stayed humble for awhile. He was blamed for a murder case he didn’t do. The judge didn’t care about hurricane being a boxer at all. The people were very prejudice back in the old days and they didn’t really care about black people. Hurricane didn’t let that stop him from getting out of prison. Lesra Martin kept in touch with him she didn’t stop writing him and meeting him in prison. Hurricane finely wrote a book about his life and the things that happen to him. Many people contributed to his book, but I owe special thanks to three individuals. My agent, Todd Shuster, called me in June of 1998 to tell me that Rubin “Hurricane” Carter might be willing to work with an author on a book about his life.
The things I like about this book is Hurricane don’t give up. I will not let them keep me in this cell for a long time I will get out”. This book is a very good book if you like action and life stories then this the book for you. Another thing I like about this book, this book doesn’t have curse words in it at all it’s a book for everybody that like boxing or just kike to read.
